Case study: Toyota

Breakdown

An AI-enhanced short-form video advertising project

Generative AI tools have significantly streamlined creative production processes. Students Brent Verley and Jarne Van Steenwinkel showcased this potential by creating short holiday-themed commercials for Toyota, collaborating with Hotel Bonka. The project emphasized rapid ideation, visual exploration, and iterative refinement through generative AI, producing engaging visuals and efficient workflows.

Initially, Brent and Jarne used ChatGPT to brainstorm holiday-themed scenarios. Brent developed concepts such as Santa’s Christmas preparations, inspired by a TikTok visual trend, and an imaginative Christmas tree ornament world. Jarne explored narrative-driven ideas such as fireworks forming car shapes and a romantic New Year’s scene in a picturesque village.

Benefits:

  • Quick exploration of creative concepts
  • Immediate generation of visuals via integrated DALL·E 3

Midjourney was extensively used by both students for rapid visual prototyping. Brent quickly tested visual ideas like Santa’s workshop and detailed Toyota car scenes, emphasizing incremental prompts to create consistent sequences. Jarne used Midjourney to visualize his romantic village and magical city concepts, selecting warm, cinematic aesthetics.

Examples:

  • Brent iteratively generated Santa scenes, noting challenges in maintaining character consistency.
  • Jarne generated moodboard imagery (“snowy mountain village,” “warm chalet lights”) to establish a cohesive visual direction.

Jarne employed LTX Studio’s AI storyboard generator, quickly visualizing script descriptions into frames, saving hours typically spent on manual drawing.

Example:

  • Jarne generated and refined storyboards swiftly, showcasing visual concepts clearly to Hotel Bonka.

Both students used Eleven Labs to produce realistic voiceovers, swiftly matching tone and messaging suitable for festive greetings, thereby adding professional narration.

Highlights:

  • Fast generation of professional, localized voiceovers.
  • Brent seamlessly integrated Eleven Labs voiceovers into the closing Toyota logo reveal.

AI-driven animation was central to their workflow. Brent effectively animated static Midjourney images with Runway Gen-3, solving complex issues (e.g., 360° car rotations) by generating keyframes from multiple angles. Jarne preferred Flux AI for rapid experimentation, animating basic camera movements and subtle effects like snow and headlights.

Examples:

  • Brent’s “rotating car” effect achieved by inputting multiple key images into Runway.
  • Jarne quickly tested multiple animation iterations in Flux, saving production credits and time.

Final polishing relied heavily on Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro. Brent used After Effects for rotoscoping, motion blur, and color grading, ensuring a cohesive, professional appearance. Jarne manually created complex visual metaphors, such as fireworks transforming into the Toyota logo, using After Effects, achieving effects that AI alone couldn’t reliably produce.

Examples:

  • Jarne manually composited ice and particle effects for a convincing magical city transformation.
  • Brent corrected small AI-generated errors using Photoshop’s Generative Fill before integrating the footage into Premiere.

Footage was methodically planned using detailed shot lists and breakdowns, maximizing shoot efficiency. Plenty of time was reserved for location scouting, test shots and gear testing.

Continuous iterative cycles, driven by fast AI adjustments, allowed for agile responses to client feedback. Brent adjusted key visual details swiftly (e.g., repositioning trees, car keys), demonstrating the flexibility of generative AI workflows. Jarne refined narrative clarity and visual consistency through iterative storyboarding and image generation, responding effectively to Hotel Bonka’s critique.

Outcome:

  • Efficient refinement cycles enhanced client satisfaction, clearly showing AI-driven flexibility and responsiveness.

Both Brent and Jarne successfully delivered visually compelling, narrative-driven commercials suitable for social media campaigns. Their final projects effectively combined generative AI tools with human creativity, resulting in polished advertisements that aligned with Toyota’s brand standards.

Takeaways for your projects
